Loving the Dog in the Dog

Humans have had a long love affair with dogs. We call them our best friends, our family, our children. We celebrate their loyalty, devotion, and their unconditional love. Yet, as much as we proclaim this love for our canine companions, we often try to "fix" the very things that make them a dog!

We quiet the bark that’s meant to communicate. We correct the instinct that sends them digging in the yard. We extinguish their natural expressions of joy and connection. And in our effort to change their behavior, we end up suppressing their true essence—their dogness.

What if instead of trying to create polite robots, we learned to live alongside our dogs as they are? What if we listened to their voices, honored their instincts, and made space for the bark, the mud, the fur, and the dog within the dog?
