The "Reactive" Dog and Other Labels

Labeling or stereotyping our dogs, their breed, or their behaviors can prevent us from seeking understanding of their underlying needs.

For example, "Reactive" is a problematic label, as we frequently use it for behaviors like barking, lunging, or growling at people or other dogs. However, what we generalize as "reactivity" can be rooted in many different causes, including past trauma, limited social exposure, pain, anxiety, frustration from unmet needs, genetics, and more.

It is critical that we don't focus on the symptoms (the "reactive" behaviors), but instead seek the cause behind the behavior.

At Souly Dog, we recognize that every dog’s story is unique, and rather than focusing on labels, we commit to understanding and supporting the individual dog. With patience, compassion, and deep listening, we address the root cause of the behaviors, not just the symptoms.
