Why is change needed?
​In the United States:

The animal welfare field has not been inclusive of BIPOC
-
BIPOC represent less than 3% of veterinarians, less than 2% of veterinary technicians, and less than 5% of professional dog trainers
-
Underserved BIPOC communities have limited or no access to pet care resources
-
BIPOC pet adoption applications are often rejected due to implicit bias (stereotypes and prejudice)
-
Pet companionship is still considered by some as a "white privilege" and BIPOC are denied the benefits of the human-animal bond

Representation Matters
Positive racial representation can improve self esteem, create feelings of belonging, and reduce harmful stereotypes. (If you want to witness the power of representation, just watch these video clips of girls reacting to the Little Mermaid trailer!)

Lack of representation, on the other hand, has been linked with low self esteem, depression, and feelings of isolation.

The predominantly-white animal welfare world can feel like an unwelcoming space for BIPOC. Souly Alliance was formed to change this narrative, and to foster a sense of belonging, support, and community.
